THE BALE AND REAL SAGA

1 September 2013 was a historic day when Real Madrid reached an agreement with Tottenham and signed Gareth Frank Bale on a world record transfer fee of £85.1 million. He was truly a Galactico signing! He was the star player of the North London Club and one of the best players in the premier league winning the PFA Players' Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards earlier that year. The winger who started off at left back was at the peak of his career, terrorising defences with his pace and venomous strikes.

Moving to a new country, adapting to a different league, adjusting to a new culture and a new language is definitely a challenge and it is a time taking process for even the best of players. Bale’s first season in Real Madrid started off on a rather disappointing note as he suffered injury after injury.

Despite the unfortunate first half of the season, when he did get a chance to play he did not disappoint. He scored goals, provided assists and was surely a handful for the defenders. He scored a 25 yard free kick, a perfect hattrick. Oh yes, how can anyone forget those memorable final minutes of the Copa Del Rey Final in an El Clasico when Bale sprinted past Marc Batra from outside the boundary of the playing surface, took control of the ball, ran towards the goal and scored! That was just another day in the office for Bale, a world class goal definitely but just one of them days for Bale and we have seen him do something like this during his days as a Spurs player too. If that wasn’t enough for you, he scored a winner in the 110th minute in extra time of just another ordinary game, the bloody champions league final that year!

His spectacular goals were perhaps the key contributing factor that led to the Spanish Media nicknaming Bale “The Cannon”. The physically dominant beast of a man was part of Real Madrid’s attacking trio consisting of Bale, Benzema and Cristiano or BBC as they called it who went on to score a plethora of goals. Bale just kicked on from that season and won trophy after trophy. He stepped up his game on the biggest European stage, the champions league final, and single handedly won them the game with two spectacular goals which included a long distance strike and a sensational overhead kick which was out of this world! Even Zidane, a world cup winner who had his fair share of glory on the European stage was stunned, amazed by the overhead volley!

Every person has his ups and downs in life and Bale has shown in the past few seasons that he is only human succumbing to injuries and controversy. There seems to be a language problem too and he just does not seem at ease at Real.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure marked the end of the BBC trio. Ronaldo was a talisman at the club and after he left the team began to struggle. Bale who perhaps would automatically make it into any club’s playing 11 has been warming the bench for far too long! He seems quite content with playing golf and getting his weekly wages as a Real Madrid player while he completes the period of his contract but Real Madrid need Bale now more than ever! Madrid’s form has dipped and although they have signed Eden Hazard, Bale still has the ability to win matches through the other flank!

A clash of egos is not something the Madridstas would like to see but clearly there is something wrong and a breakdown of sorts in the relationship between Bale and Zidane! Zidane and Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett were seen lashing out in public. Zidane claimed that Bale refused to play in a friendly and he also mentioned that the club are working on a way out for Bale. Gareth was reported to be in China for a transfer to Chinese Super League club Jiansu Suning where he would earn as much as Messi! Real Madrid however, dramatically blocked the transfer as they refused to allow Bale, a world record signing to leave on a free transfer. Madrid perhaps made this decision after the 7-3 loss to Athletico and after the injury to Marco Ascensio. Jonathan now claims that the problem is simple and that Zidane does not like Bale.

What we do know for sure is that Bale has got a contact till 2022 and it seems like he is quite happy to sit it out. The situation is such that now the club does not want to sell him unless they get a good deal but Zidane does not fancy Bale. Something has to be worked out and one can only hope that there is some solution found to this problem. This is not the first time we are witnessing a situation like this where a manager and a player just cannot work together. Maybe they should focus on the positives of Bale’s time at Real, give Bale the respect he deserves, settle their differences, man to man, professionally behind the scenes. The club is bigger than any individual and sadly it looks like Real Madrid has been affected by the whole situation. The fans would love to see the Cannon firing again. Just imagine Bale firing at one flank while Hazard is on the other! It would add a whole new dynamic to the team and not only help improve the dip in recent form, but also help them cope with the mini injury crisis wherein 5 players of their current squad are injured.

Do you think that Bale is criticised unfairly at Real Madrid and does not get the credit he deserves? Let me know in the comments section below.
